How We Secured Funding to Restore Darjeeling’s Ecosystem and Support Tea Farmers

Darjeeling Revival Project

Enhanced Rock Weathering

A Case Study

The Darjeeling Revival Project is a pioneering effort by Alt Carbon to integrate carbon removal strategies into one of India’s most iconic tea-growing regions. By leveraging Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW)—a process where finely crushed basalt rock is spread across farmland to absorb CO₂ from rainwater—this initiative aims to tackle both climate change and soil degradation simultaneously.

Darjeeling’s tea estates, known for their delicate terroir and high-altitude cultivation, face increasing threats due to climate instability, erratic monsoons, and declining soil health. Traditional farming methods are proving insufficient against these challenges. Through this project, Alt Carbon introduces a regenerative, science-backed approach that not only removes atmospheric CO₂ but also enhances soil fertility, improves water retention, and boosts crop yields for farmers.

Securing funding for such an ambitious project required a compelling argument that aligned climate action with economic incentives. By demonstrating how ERW could be scaled across tea estates while providing measurable carbon removal credits, Alt Carbon successfully gained support from leading climate investors and corporate sustainability buyers. The funding secured through this initiative is now driving on-ground implementation, research, and long-term impact measurement, ensuring that Darjeeling’s tea industry can thrive while contributing to global climate goals.
