Our story

Shrey (M.Sc. Chemistry, BITS Pilani) & Sparsh (International Climate Law, University of Oxford) are siblings from a family that’s been managing tea estates in North East India for 3 generations. They combine their educational qualifications and past experiences to run Alt Carbon, in order to revive their family’s heritage tea estates in Darjeeling, thereby transforming the Indian tea industry from being severely at-risk of climate change impact, to becoming the frontier of climate action.

Our story begins amidst the lush landscapes of Darjeeling, a region renowned for its exquisite tea estates and breathtaking scenery.
By 2017, however, Darjeeling's tea industry was in deep crisis: political strikes, counterfeit teas, and climate change threatened their legacy.
However, the Darjeeling brothers—Shrey and Sparsh—felt a renewed sense of purpose and decided to fight for the estate's revival.
To solve for the crisis, the brothers first launched Dorje Teas, a DTC brand, delivering authentic Darjeeling tea across India.
As Dorje Teas gained momentum, friends and supporters rallied around them - thus forming Selim Hill Collective.
Next, recognizing Darjeeling's unique suitability for Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW), the brothers launched Alt Carbon in early 2023.
With a vision to scale up to 500,000 hectares by 2030, their aim is to give Darjeeling a second chance not just to survive but to thrive.

Our science is driven by

Dr. Chakrabarti

PhD Univ. Rochester, USA  Postdoc Harvard University

A Professor at IISc Bangalore with 25+ years of experience, Dr. Chakrabarti specializes in geochemical and isotopic proxies. He has 60+ publications and leads isotope-based silicate weathering quantification for Alt Carbon.

Dr. Misra

PhD FSU, USA;  Postdoc Cambridge University, UK

An Associate Professor at IISc Bangalore, Dr. Misra specializes in chemical oceanography and the global carbon cycle. At Alt Carbon, he refines carbon removal measurements using isotopic analysis.

Dr. Ganguly

PhD, IISc Bangalore, India  

Dr. Ganguly specializes in water-rock interactions and geochemical modeling. He enhances Alt Carbon’s protocols and CDR methods and pioneered India's first stable isotope measurements at IISc Bangalore.
